I LOVE when old, beautiful buildings are restored to their original grandeur - especially civic spaces. I worked next door to Grand Central Station when it was being restored in the mid '90's and I was amazed on a daily basis. When pieces of scaffolding came down people would just stand in awe - and yes, I was one of those gawkers. Perhaps I am just a romantic fool, but when you set foot inside one of these amazingly restored buildings, it is like stepping back in time. So much so that you barely notice when other people are bumping into to you to catch the next train!

The latest to be added to the "saved" column and restored is the Hoboken Terminal in New Jersey. This beautiful Beaux-Arts-style building has been brought back to life by Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners—the firm behind masterful restorations at Grand Central Terminal.

I hear that Penn Station is up next and can't wait to see what they do, given the original iconic Penn Station was torn down in the '60's!

Can you imagine tearing that down and replacing it with this?

Yeah - they got that right... not.

Extreme Tufting!

Looks like Restoration Hardware has hopped on the extreme tufting bandwagon with their lavish Soho Collection...

I've been noticing the tufted-all-over look popping up everywhere lately... and I LOVE it (though I think I prefer it on smaller pieces of furniture versus an enormous sectional as above).

Bet you didn't know that Kravet was at the Superbowl? Yep, it was nearly out-shined by the iconic Madonna, but if you look closely you can see Kravet's Leopard print on the throne atop which Madonna is perched.

Makes me think of the beloved Mary McDonald Leopard study:

Tory Burch: On the Inside

Have you caught any of the buzz from Fashion Week down in NYC? I particularly loved seeing the images from the Tory Burch Fall 2012 Runway Show.

While I love Tory's fashions, I'm an even bigger fan of the vibe set forth by the interior design of her various retail stores (created by Daniel Romualdez). I've visited her retail spots in Soho (NYC), Greenwich (CT) and Short Hills (NJ), and it's always the same... unmistakable glam, bold graphics, and a healthy dose of mirrored surfaces, gold, and orange. So yummy...

Curtain Height - What's Right?

When installing draperies for a client, we are often asked advice on the proper placement of hardware in relation to the window, moldings, and ceiling. It is commonly thought that hanging the hardware as high as possible serves to increase one's perception of the ceiling height and overall size of the room. But there seem to be plenty of varying opinions and options out there on this topic!

I loved this diagram and description as provided by Alexa Hampton in the Wall Street Journal (of all places)!

Hampton illustrates, from left to right, the "Choke Hold" (hardware installed directly on top of the window casing), the "In Between Solution" (with the hardware installed half way between the top of the window molding and the crown molding) and the "Height is Right"option (with the hardware installed just under the crown molding.

Is Green the New "Orange"?

So according to Pantone, Tangerine Tango (orange) is the color of the year. But I have to admit, I have been seeing a TON of green lately. Have you seen House Beautiful this month?? They dedicated an entire issue to green. From "green" products and raw materials to fun green fashion, paint colors and fabrics; green seems to be the place to be. It can work as a neutral or be the "pop" of color. It doesn't matter what shade of green either - it can be a soft pale green to very intense kelly green and seemingly every shade in between!

Did you watch the Grammys last night? I made it most of the way through, with Adele and Jennifer Hudson's riveting performances keeping me up later than usual.

I always enjoy the Red Carpet arrivals, and checking out the designer duds. Here's my round-up of some of the night's most notable looks, and the interiors they remind me of!

Taylor Swift's sweeping Zuhair Murad gown is refined and elegant - just like the House Beautiful bedroom below...

Nicki Minaj and a Swiss Villa's master suite as showcased in Elle Decor. While there's talent there, it's just over the top (in both cases!)...

Decorator Eye for the Divorced Guy

Earlier this week, the New York Times ran an article about a new niche in decorating for the "perfect" client - the newly divorced, heterosexual male (guess they wanted to publish this kind of unromantic article before Valentines next week!).

And what makes the newly divorced guy the perfect client for an interior designer or decorator? He tends to be "hands-off", ready to get things done quickly, and he often comes to the table with little more than "one trophy and a mix tape", according to Kimberlee Paige Hanson, 41, the founder of Sexy Bachelor Pad.

One of the greatest challenges in decorating for the recently split single? He often has kids, so there's the need to design a home that is child-friendly and cozy, but at the same time sophisticated and grown-up enough to entice potential dates...

Here's how I would decorate for the newly divorced guy... rich, masculine tones and textures, with just enough pops of texture and metal to keep things lively...

A "Nod" to Chevron

You may remember just last week I wrote a post all about Chevron - which I am totally obsessed with right now. In fact we are putting a black and white chevron rug in a clients living room and it's going to be smokin' - but more on that another time.

So you must have guessed my reaction when I saw this email come through from "The Land of Nod"... yep, I just about fell out of my chair. How awesome is this?!? Especially for a kids room or a play room?

I mean seriously... just too adorable!!

House Beautiful in Browns and Blacks

It's an oldie but goodie... I've never tired of this gorgeous living room, published in House Beautiful back in 2008. I love how the designer beautifully combines chocolate brown and black, something most people would consider an "either/or" (similarly, we're seeing navy blue and black paired together more frequently). Paired with just enough crystal, gold and white ceramic accents, this sophisticated room will continue to pass the test of time!

Shut Out! Jason Wu for Target

Did you get shut out too? Lord knows, I wasn't about to cyber-stalk Target's online site but I have to admit I was very curious to see what Jason Wu had up his sleeve for Target. The stealth launching of his collection last night took everyone by surprise - apparently to avoid the whole Missoni website crash...yet the Jason Wu for Target collection sold out in hours.

You may remember that Jason Wu designed Michelle Obama's beautiful white Inaugural dress...

...which now resides in the Smithsonian:

And since then, Jason Wu designs has been frequently showing up on celebrities like Reese Witherspoon and Camilla Belle.

Seriously, if I had abs that looked like this, I'd rock this outfit too!!

Jason Wu's collection for Target was inspired by a French 1960's theme...

...a big difference from his couture line as seen on the celebs above!

Seems like Target has had much success partnering with well known couture designers. I wonder who's up next?!?

The Perfectly Imperfect Home: From Illustration to Photo

As a gift, I recently received Deborah Needleman(she of our dearly departed Domino)'s new book The Perfectly Imperfect Home from a special someone. Needleman's done a great job compiling a readable guide to living and decorating well, including practical and sometimes surprising tips for "glamification", "cozification", and even including a bit of ugly in each room!

Needleman's book is beautifully illustrated, in watercolor, by Virginia Johnson. While the renderings are stunning, I must say I was itching to also see the "real deal", or the photographs of the rooms that inspired the illustrations! So I set out to track them down myself.

Some I recognized immediately, including the blue lacquered walls of this Miles Redd living room...

Though you have to wonder why Johnson chose to skip the insane zebra doors to the left in the wide shot!

Look for Less: The New Pottery Barn Catalog

To be honest, I usually throw the Pottery Barn catalog in the recycling bin (along with the majority of my 1st graders school work, and then pretend it was some kid of horrible mistake if I get busted) without flipping through it.

The other day, I thought I'd see what's new at Pottery Barn, and was interested to see a couple of copies, or "interpretations" as they like to say, of some pretty great pieces! Of course, there's nothing like the real deal, and quite frankly there is no comparing the quality of a Pottery Barn piece to the quality of a Hickory Chair piece. But, alas, money doesn't grow on trees, and there's something to be said of the accessibility of Pottery Barn and these pieces!

So I think we are all on the same page here that Starck's Louis Ghost Chairs rock. We have blogged about them before, and love that they are functional, fun and add a touch of whimsy to any room.

I mean seriously, what better chair could you have in front of that view?!?

Up All Night Chair: Update!

Last week we posted about the gorgeous, but unidentified, fabric covering the living room chairs on the Up All Night set.

A reader named Darcie was kind enough to write in and identify it for us. While I was searching Lee Lofa, Schumacher, and Kravet, figuring it for a $100/yard or more fabric, turns out its made by Waverly, and sells for just $10.95/yard!

The fabric is indeed indoor/outdoor, and is called "A New Twist". It comes in three colorways...

Chair Envy: Up All Night

Thursday nights are my favorite comedy night, hands down, with an enviable line-up on NBC including 30 Rock and Up All Night. Have you caught the new sitcom starring Christina Applegate and Will Arnett yet? It's pretty legit - Appelgate's comedic timing is spot on, and Arnett (husband of Amy Poehler .. imagine the comedic chops of their offspring?) is cute as the exasperated husband/new dad.

I love the family's California mid-century ranch - even though it's not very "me". Specifically, I'm totally distracted by/obsessed with the family living room chairs...

How awesome is that cheerful but modern upholstery fabric?

Our kitchen looked like a tornado hit this past week when we had our second measly snowstorm of the season (the first one hitting just before Halloween). "Sleep Tight": Rope Beds

This weekend I received one of those goofy forwarded emails; this one titled "Stuff You Didn't Know You Didn't Know". Reading it resulted not only in me trying to lick my elbow (impossible! Who knew?), but also in me learning the origin of the phrase "sleep tight".

Apparently, in Shakespearean times, mattresses were secured to the bed frame using ropes. Pulling the ropes would result in the tightening of the mattress, making it firmer to sleep on. As such.... "good night, sleep tight" came about.

Reading this snippet about mattresses and rope reminded me of how many beds I've seen lately suspended by ropes (different concept for sure, but this is where my mind took me).

I think it's a great look for a guest room in a casual beach or lake home... very nautical and rustic, don't you think?

The look is also whimsical and fun for shared kids spaces...

Here's hoping those are some sturdy ropes!

Time Out!

My three year old is wearing on my every last nerve lately, as she seems more demanding, stubborn, and insistent than ever. She seems to be giving up her nap ("I don't know how to close my eyes!" she told me yesterday), wails for her preferred cup/jacket/toy/seat at high decibels, and even insists that I turn off the Bruno Wars song "It Will Rain" within 2 seconds of it coming on in the car. I mean really!

Some time outs seem in order lately, and I found the perfect avenue! Check out these adorable Time Out stools from Wisteria! Your kid can sit in time out in style, with a sand timer of 5 minutes. Love it!

This time the event is "Project Runway: 2012 'Who's Who in the Headlines'". I am designing and creating a dress, and Deb has graciously agreed to wear my creation down the catwalk at the Burlington Marriot. It is sure to be a hoot!! My Missing "Peacock Mirror" Ring

We had an almost-perfect long weekend away skiing and hanging with family friends... until we were packing up to go, and I looked down at what used to be my wedding ring and saw this...

Major, major wahhhhh. For our 10th anniversary last summer, we had my engagement stone reset into the setting above (though much of it is missing from the picture). The inspiration for the new setting last summer (in my design-obsessed brain only)? The Peacock mirror, most notably made by Wisteria, but interpreted by Restoration Hardware, Pier One, among others...

But I digress...

Monday morning turned into a bit of a sh*t show of ring hunting. Here is my hubby going through the garbage with kitchen tongs looking for the center of the ring...

And my girls applying the same technique with the cut-open contents of the vacuum cleaner bag...

After a couple of hours of fruitless hunting, there was nothing to do but give up. We tried to salvage the day with some skiing and a Chinese food dinner (really, what doesn't that cure?) before heading back to Boston. I did my best to keep it all in perspective, because after all it was just a misplaced object - as long as my family itself is intact, everything else is relative, for sure.

At the same time, I had a heavy heart thinking of all the loving time, care and investment my now-husband put into obsessively researching and purchasing the diamond he would propose to me with when I was just 23. It seemed symbolic of a simpler time - in our relationship, and our lives in general. A time before we were bogged down with the happy but often stressful complications of family life... home ownership, the price of fuel oil, the pitter patter of flying squirrels in the attic, children who won't fill-in-the-blank: potty train, successfully complete basic math, or talk to grown-ups, etc, etc, etc...

But I digress....

When we got back to Boston later that night, as I unpacked a favorite sweater, I heard a "clink" against the hardware floor, and sure enough there was the center of my "peacock mirror" ring!

Out of a Rut!

I have been working on my bedroom for what seems like forever. I was on a roll last fall when we finally pulled the trigger on some "new" antique Danish furniture which triggered a flurry of DIY projects like refinishing the bed and storage chest. I had custom curtains made that I thought I loved (more on these later). I added in some accessories and pfffffffttttttttd. The wind was completely knocked out of my sails. It was soo not what I was going for. It lacked drama and romance, it lacked the "me" feeling that we try so hard to achieve for our clients.

So I did what any sane person would do: start over. Yep, I removed all the elements from the room that were not working for me. And only then started adding the pieces that I truly LOVE. Not what I was able to get for a good deal (ahem, curtains...) or that someone else liked, but what really resonated with me.

I found these fabrics and am totally digging the color combination!

I found this print on Etsy that I adore because it reminds me of the weekend my now husband proposed in Paris. It rained the entire time and this image captures it beautifully. It also happens to bring together the relaxing spa-like color palette of the room.

The Disappearing Book Shelf?

I came late to the game, but I'm a total convert to reading electronically on my IPad. Of my book group, there's only one or two hold-outs who can't give up the good, old-fashioned feel of an actual book, with actual print on actual paper!

With books becoming more and more obsolete, I have to wonder... will book shelves become a vestige of the past as well? It would be such a shame, especially when there are such creative shelving ideas out there!

We were recently meeting with a potential client when she showed us her kitchen - and there on the chandelier were the coolest candle sleeves from KaarsKoker. I've seen many candle sleeves created to mimic real candles with dripping wax etc, but these were sooooo much better!!! I have been obsessed with chandeliers lately and this isn't helping any!!

Ski Envy: Aerin Lauder's Aspen Home

I feel like I'm a little late to the game - I live in New England, yet waited 6 (almost 7) years to introduce my girls to skiing (gasp). The good news? They fell in love with the sport immediately, and can't wait to go again (in five days). The bad news? It's darn expensive, and after paying for lessons, gear, and lift tickets, it's highly unlikely I'll be spending my winters in an Aspen chalet like Aerin Lauders...

The stunning home of the cosmetic heiress, as photographed by Vogue, lets the natural environment take center stage. I'm loving the restrained neutrals and rich textures that serve to give the home such warm depth...

The only place Lauder brings bold color into the home? The mudroom! Guess the ski wear companies weren't cooperating with her design scheme!

Matchy Matchy: Fabric and Wallpaper

Yesterday at the Boston Design Center, I was surprised to notice that Lee Joffa is now offering one of my favorite David Hicks' fabrics, La Fiorentina (which I'e blogged about here), in a grasscloth-like wallpaper!

Because La Fiorentina is such a large and bold pattern, I wonder if designers will go either/or on the fabric/wallpaper, or just go for broke and do it all!

Although matching wallpaper and fabric was essentially a turn of the century trend (as in Victorian Era, not Y2K!), it seems it might be making a comeback...

Disco Ball Chic

Yesterday while sourcing lighting for a client, I came across the coolest lighting fixture. Turns out it's headed to the home of a well known interior designer (who shall remain nameless, since I snuck this shot and can't imagine he/she would appreciate me spilling the lighting beans on his/her personal pad!).

The fixture served as a veritable disco ball at a club/dance hall in the Adirondacks, of all places! I say "veritable" because this piece was so ahead of its time, that it actually predated the disco era by a good half century. The designer who owns it is gifted enough to use it flawlessly in whatever design he/she comes up with.

And how about the rest of us? Could we work a disco ball into our (undoubtedly more humble) digs?

They look particularly striking against a black wall or ceiling, similar to what you'd expect at a dance club...

Though on the other hand, the suspended disco balls provide an unexpected but more subtle detailing against a backdrop of white minimalism.

Looking for something decorative for your fireplace?

Or just something to trip on while you're busy gazing at your awesome gallery wall?

Maybe this would encourage my youngest to try on the potty more regularly...

In the Bedroom: Horizontal Striped Curtains

I've blogged about my love for horizontal striped curtains before here, and finally have some to call my own. Mine, which are linen, went up yesterday, and are going a long way to help finish my master bedroom redo.

They're made from the same fabric as the upholstered headboard, bedding, and bedskirt.

In the daytime, they provide just the perfect blend of weight and airiness

They're pretty graphic and bold when closed, don't you think?

Look for Less: Beni Ourain Rug

It's nice to see the new catalogs arriving with fresh products for the fresh year (especially those implying Spring is right around the corner, just like Christmas was right around the corner back in July when they started hawking holiday decor).

I think West Elm's new "interpretation" of the on-trend Moroccan beni ourain is pretty legit... and at $699 for a 8x10, it sure beats the real deal.

When Lonny magazine published the stunning apartment of Pieces owner Lee Kleinhelter last year, I was most taken with her use of hanging pendant lamps instead of bedside table lamps in two of the bedrooms....

Not only can this look be visually stunning, but it also frees up valuable nightstand space for books and other accessories! The bedside hanging pendants seem to be a trend that keeps popping up in rooms both understated, funky, and serene...

Trendspotting: Modern Spool Bed

I went bananas for this modern interpretation of the traditional spool bed. How striking, right?

I first saw it featured in the same Celerie Kemble-designed Manhattan apartment (above) that inspired my post on starburst ceiling fixtures.

Then, a couple of days later while browsing the website of a beautiful Kennenbunk bed and breakfast featured in Rue, it (or a close copy) cropped up again!

The Ferret bed by Noir is pure sleeping perfection if you ask me...

These interpretations aint' half bad, either!

Walking Tour of New York City Christmas Windows

New York City pulls out all the stops for the Christmas season, and the department store windows are a star of the show! From Berdorfs to Barneys to Saks to Macys, they are just fantastic! As a NYC resident, I used to scoff at the tourists queuing up to see the windows... and now I could squeeze in a trip to NYC just to see them!

AND, leave it to Bloomingdales to set-up a camera in the window to take pictures of all the gawkers AND set-up a Facebook page where they post the images.... Brilliant. Freakin' Brilliant!!!

Around the House: Christmas Tree Card Wreath

My Christmas tree card wreath got a new spot this year, and I love that it's the first thing you see when you walk in the front door...

Receiving everyone's photo cards is my favorite part of the season (and making and sending my own is my least favorite part of the season!)...

I love to see the wreath hanging from my new Worlds Away sconce and against my new grasscloth wallpaper (but hate to be reminded everytime I walk by that I have yet to send my own cards yet!)...

Pink Plaza!

Yesterday we showed you trends in Christmas pink - and today we're back with a notable addition. This year, the Christmas tree at the famed NYC Plaza hotel was designed by Betsey Johnson and it is PINK!! Not just a little pink... we're talking seriously pink, like you can barely see any green of the tree. The inspiration is none other than the Plaza's most famous fictional resident - Eloise!

Oh My Darling Clementine Candle

I saw the cutest tutorial on Apartment Therapy last week about how to make a candle out of just a clementine and a little olive oil. I buy these by the box for my little ones, so I thought I'd give it a whirl this evening in the 3 spare minutes I had between their dance dress rehearsal and their hastily prepared and not very good supper. Check out my version and photographs below!

The first step is to essentially empty out the clementine by scoring it around the circumference and carefully peeling off the skin of the two halves.

One half will hopefully (miraculously?) leave you with the attached pip to be used as your wick. To this half, add a couple of tablespoons of olive oil to prevent burning.

Strike a match and light 'er up... no "real" wick or tea candle insert required...

For the top half of the clementine/candle, score a design of your choosing to create a vent...

Once you've cut out your design, put your clementine back together....

...and turn out the lights to enjoy your homemade, sweet smelling light show!

The November/December issue of Lonny features a beautiful Manhattan apartment decorated by Celerie Kimball. In the foyer, Kimball features a pair of striking sunburst ceiling light fixtures.

I'd come across these fixtures, made by Global Views, before. They had caught my eye because I'm constantly looking for decent looking flush mounts, of which there are not many!

Here's a slightly more subtle version, in what looks like a semi-flush mount.

This year's NYC Holiday Showhouse featured a variation with a lighting fixture enhanced by a sunburst ceiling medallion.

I love how this reddish-orange combines the fiery and fiesty feel of this...

Trending: Matryoshka Dolls

The cutest Matryoshka doll (or Russian nesting doll) baby blanket popped up on Joss and Main yesterday, reduced from $125 to $49.95. We saw these adorable blankets at the NYIGF in August, and I just fell in love with them.

I've always loved nesting dolls, and remember being fascinated with my grandmother's set as a young child. So I'm getting a kick out of seeing them pop up everywhere lately, especially for the holiday season!

Crate and Barrel and Williams-Sonoma offer adorable ornaments and cookies this Christmas...

I picked up these sweet nesting cups for my youngest daughter for Christmas (yes, more for me than for her, especially since I just noticed they say "for adult use only" on the box).

Fred's Flare also features these other Matryoshka-themed kitchen items...

And from designer Thomas Paul...

There's about a billion variations on the Matryoshka theme out there which replace another animal or image for the doll. I picked up this sock monkey variation for ~~one of my daughters~~ me for Christmas too.

And my hedgehog obsessed twin would got nuts for this set, from etsy!

At least I didn't go as far as ordering these for our family card this year!

Hoofing It!

Have you come across Christian Louboutin's latest outrageous pair of pumps, the "Alex"? I mean not in person, obviously, since only eight pair were made available in the United States.

Apparently, two of these eight pair went to Sarah Jessica Parker and Blake Lively...

Candidly, I think these are among the ugliest things I've seen in my life... which works out nicely, since at $4,995 a pair, they weren't making their way into my closet in this lifetime anyway.

But seeing these animal paw shoes on the pages of one of the weekly tabloids recently reminded me of my similar reaction to seeing graphic hoofs and paws at the base of some otherwise pretty fab furniture....

Is it me? Why do these pieces gross me out so much? Paws, claws, and hooves have been used as table feet for ages, but there's something about the graphic/literal nature of these pieces, legs included, that isn't working for me.

(If you watched Million Dollar Decorators, you might remember Jeffrey Alan Marks and his partner Ross dramatically vying for this Dickinson table at an antique show). This side table, for some reason, is easier for me to stomach. It might be because it's a less literal interpretation - you'd feel less like you'd broken off an animals legs for the sake of a funky stool or bench in your home, you know?

DIY Capiz Chandelier

Yep, you read it correctly, a D-I-Y Capiz Chandelier. Notice I left out the word "shell". Well in this case, the shells are made from wax paper. I recently came across a blog called "Freshly Picked" written by Susan Peterson. She posted a wonderful tutorial on how to make a look alike Capiz Shell Chandelier out of wax paper circles sewn together and draped over an old lamp shade frame. It is genius. I have been searching for a small Capiz chandelier for months for my bedroom - ever since the one I ordered arrived and was so long, it nearly brushed the duvet on my bed.

Here is the object of my desire - but notice the long chains up to the canopy? Yeah - earlier versions of this photo stopped just after the top of the shells...oh well. I still LOVE it and would absolutely use it in a larger room!! It is gorgeous in real life!!

Here is West Elm's version - a little sparse on the shells if I do say so myself...but for $129 bucks, it's a steal!

And here is Susan Peterson's DIY wax paper Capiz Chandelier... Pretty lovely - huh?!?

Then it was time to assemble the wax paper capiz "shells"...

Summer in December

Is anyone as confused as I am? This past weekend we put up the Christmas tree and the outside lights in 60+ degree weather. Earlier this week, it was closer to 70! Might I remind you that we live north of Boston?!? I can't remember another winter quite as wacky - my roses are still blooming and my daffodils have come up. I'd say perhaps Mother Nature is as confused as I am ;). It reminds me of the 18 months we spent living in Austin Texas. That year, we bought our Christmas tree wearing shorts and t-shirts.

As a result, I have to admit I am having a hard time getting in the "holiday" spirit. Perhaps this is more the style I should be going for this year!!!

Okay, it is a little kitchy, but I do love a good shell theme...

Or maybe it will evolve into light airy neutrals, white and silver...

And if all else fails...

How are you getting "in the mood" for Christmas?

This past weekend we ventured to Lehigh (our alma mater - yes, cue sappy music... my husband and I are college sweethearts!) for the 147th playing of Lehigh/Lafayette. This is one of the longest running college football rivalries, and a fun tradition to be a part of. It was a fantastic crisp fall day on old South Mountain and we had an awesome time watching all the crazy kids - err - the football game. And in honor of Lehigh's victory - err, TROUNCING of Lafayette (37-13), I decided to show some rooms featuring Lehigh's colors: Brown and White.

Many thanks to readers for commenting and emailing about last week's post "One Stunning Room, Two Different Layouts (Maybe)". You helped me identify the original source as Chicago Home and Garden Magazine, featuring the suburban Wheaton home of Kay Eck.

As you helped me realize, the shots above and below are of adjacent walls in the same room, with the same layout.

I love the dark and rich paint colors used in the den and library - so cozy and warm!

The light and airy open layout of the kitchen, dining, and living room stands in stark contrast to the intimacy of the den and library.

The Ecks did a fabulous job of bringing their eclectic and contemporary sensibility to this historic neighborhood, don't you think?
