Olde Good Things

A couple of weeks ago, I had a few hours in my old stomping ground of the Upper West Side, and finally got to visit Olde Good Things, an unbelievable store front specializing in all things vintage, "altered antiques", and generally cool stuff.

I was like a kid in a candy store, scoping out the diverse and funky lighting...

These Art Deco schoolhouse pendants were a favorite.  Wouldn't they be stunning over an enormous kitchen island?

Olde Good Things made these gorgeous tables from a tree salvaged after Hurricane Wilma.......

And the base is made from chains from the Staten Island Ferry!

A table with a similar base, but marble top, made by Olde Good Things recently graced the cover of House Beautiful.

Love this!

The store's filled with all kinds of random but fun vintage items, including this Macy's elevator sign. Would love this in a basement or rec room!

The collection of antique hardware is beyond impressive...

Brimfield...or Bust?

So you may have seen the posting on our Facebook page that I went to Brimfield on Friday. If you aren't familiar with Brimfield, it is one of the largest outdoor antique markets in the country that takes place 3 times a year.  It stretches about a mile long with dealers on either side of the highway stretching back at least the length of a football field, if not two.

Being that it is only about an hour drive from Boston, we usually try to get there to see what's happening. And I am sad to say that during this past excursion, it just wasn't "happening".  The show was very busy and route 20 was jammed with cars and people walking, but I thought the overall quality was way down from years past. Now I have to admit, I only got through about a third of the show... maybe I just missed the good stuff. I'd be curious to hear your feedback and see if you shared the same experience.

I did see some fun stuff - or not... Seriously, a couple of these had big SOLD tags on them...

 I saw tons of suitcases... which I think are getting a little tired...

...along with rusty, metal letters...

 ...antique-esque embroidered linens.

 

These wooden planes are sort of neat and I did see a bunch of old tools, but how random is that creepy dolly?!?

There were also tons of signs - these could be cool in a funky family room or outside a pool house.

I spied a disturbing amount of old rifles.  These at least looked the part with the Western saddle, which I adored. (Though the English riding boots are totally out of place.)

Giddy-up! (And ditto on the boots.)

These were the scarce few treasures I brought home - an old water pitcher from the Continental Hotel in Washington DC...I had been trying to find a fun water pitcher for ages!

Random small copper pots...seriously, I do have copper in my kitchen, but did I really need to buy these? Not really - I think I was just trying soooo hard to find SOMETHING I could use.

And this adorable "set" of 12 cream soup spoons that I plan to use during the holidays.

Decorating and Collecting Across the Centuries in NJ

There's an "old school" thought in decorating that the furnishings and collections that grace a home should come from the same era as the home itself.  I definitely don't agree, but I think it takes a skilled collector to create cohesion across eras.

Trent Wisehart, who specializes in store design and visual merchandising for Tommy Hilfiger, has pulled it off beautifully in his 1896 Colonial Revival South Orange, NJ home, as featured in Elle Decor.

Over the living room mantle, Wisehart mixes an abstract oil painting he picked up in Michigan with 19th century Chinese vases he snagged at a Paris flea market.  And all these goodies share the space flawlessly with a 1960s Italian light fixture - love!

The foyer is my favorite space in the house, greeting guests with a 1940s chair from Belgium, 1950s table lamps from Paris, and stunning pendants overhead.

Wisehart keeps the color scheme super tight throughout the home, which I think is part of the reason collections as diverse as those below (19th century gilt mirror, 18th and 19th century Wedgewood pieces, 1940s club chairs) work so well!

In the kitchen, a nice break from the richer walls throughout the rest of the home... with a stunning mid-century chandelier bringing formality to the space...

Upstairs, the bedrooms provide more of the (spectacular!) same, with Japanese scrolls, a 19th century zebra taxidermy, and antique bedding reflecting the travels and passions of their owner.

Powder room, you had me at "Waterworks" and "antique 1920s Venetian mirror"...

Brimfield!

Have you heard?

Brimfield is EARLY this year! The largest outdoor antique show in New England (some claiming the world) is opening on MAY 8th!  I can hardly wait....Here are some images of our past finds to whet your whistle:

If you have never been, get out your walking shoes, sunscreen and bottled water because this puppy is big and goes on and on and on....

It also repeats again in July and September!!  Let us know if you make the trek!!
