Mirror, Mirror: New and Noteworthy

We all love a great starburst mirror (I have two), so no disrespect but... it's super nice to see some other awesome mirrors crop up here and there!

LOVE this Nava Bone mirror from today's One Kings Lane sale.

But alas, someone else did, too...

The "Porcupine Quill" mirror is super hot and a little freaky at the same time.  Don't worry folks, no porcupines were harmed in the production of this piece - it's hand-painted to look like real quills.  And it would MAKE a room, if used correctly.

If you like the colors of the porcupine, but are still attached to the starburst thing, check out this variation.  Ebony and gold...yummmmm...

If you're looking for something a little more understated, with perfect proportions, the Zanzibar is an elegant choice...

Or if you need a little more punch, Oomph's Newport Mirror is, as they say decadent.  Plus, it's available in sixteen colors, or you can custom create your own.  This company can do no wrong in my opinion!

Look for Less: Peacock Mirror

Are you still loving the dramatic "Peacock Mirror" that's been making the rounds the last couple of years (and inspired my missing ring story last winter)?  I do!  Apparently, the folks at Rue agree, as it made the pages of yesterday's issue not once, but twice!

First, we see it featured as a funky companion to a festive bar cart in Rue's own San Francisco offices...

Later in the issue, a similar mirror appears in a San Francisco living room designed by Soledad Alzaga.  I just love how it plays with the chandelier in this space!

Wisteria no longer carries its version, which ran over $2,000.  But Restoration Hardware has gotten into the game with this little number (but it ain't cheap, either)...

If you're looking for a budget alternative, Z Gallerie's come out with a decent copy, redubbed the "Marrakesh Oval Mirror", and the price is right!

My Missing "Peacock Mirror" Ring

We had an almost-perfect long weekend away skiing and hanging with family friends... until we were packing up to go, and I looked down at what used to be my wedding ring and saw this...

Major, major wahhhhh.  For our 10th anniversary last summer, we had my engagement stone reset into the setting above (though much of it is missing from the picture).  The inspiration for the new setting last summer (in my design-obsessed brain only)?  The Peacock mirror, most notably made by Wisteria, but interpreted by Restoration Hardware, Pier One, among others...

But I digress...

Monday morning turned into a bit of a sh*t show of ring hunting.   Here is my hubby going through the garbage with kitchen tongs looking for the center of the ring...

And my girls applying the same technique with the cut-open contents of the vacuum cleaner bag...

After a couple of hours of fruitless hunting, there was nothing to do but give up.  We tried to salvage the day with some skiing and a Chinese food dinner (really, what doesn't that cure?) before heading back to Boston.  I did my best to keep it all in perspective, because after all it was just a misplaced object - as long as my family itself is intact, everything else is relative, for sure.  

At the same time, I had a heavy heart thinking of all the loving time, care and investment my now-husband put into obsessively researching and purchasing the diamond he would propose to me with when I was just 23.  It seemed symbolic of a simpler time - in our relationship, and our lives in general.  A time before we were bogged down with the happy but often stressful complications of family life... home ownership, the price of fuel oil, the pitter patter of flying squirrels in the attic, children who won't fill-in-the-blank: potty train, successfully complete basic math, or talk to grown-ups, etc, etc, etc...

But I digress....

When we got back to Boston later that night, as I unpacked a favorite sweater, I heard a "clink" against the hardware floor, and sure enough there was the center of my "peacock mirror" ring!

Round Mirrors: Moving Past the Starburst

The round, metallic starburst mirror has had quite a run in the past few years... but I have to say, I'm ready to move on!  Lately, I'm loving wood, leather, mother of pearl, or even rope mirrors, and the warmth and texture they provide.

My favorite two wooden mirrors in my own home came from the Brimfield antique fair (over my desk), and Homegoods...
