A Refreshing Summer Retreat!

In college when I used to ride the Hampton Jitney out to Montauk, NY, we used to always make a stop on a beautiful strip of land on the Eastern side of Amagansett, for two slightly run down "motel-esque" places, "The Driftwood on the Ocean" and the "Hermitage".  I was always very curious about these places as the location is more than ideal:  the bay on one side, the ocean on the other and views as far as you can see in all directions.
Turns out that not long ago they converted the Driftwood into a co-op, and a revolution has begun.  The staff provides towels, cleans the apartments, maintains the pool and beach (a five minute walk away) and even provides crisp white linens to the owners.  All you need to do is pack your weekend bag, stop at the local market for some provisions, and voila you are on vacation!  Oh how I wish I'd been in the right place at the right time, as this sounds like my kind of summer retreat!!

The Bakhash family recently renovated two of these units (that they got for a STEAL no less) into a "Modest Summer Retreat" and the story was featured in the New York Times.  They combined two units into a fresh, clean retro space for their family to relax on the weekend.  Minus the chores of owning a home, it is a real treat!  They kept the original 1950's feel to the place and punched it up with bright splashes of color and crisp white furniture.

Here are some of the images of their truly relaxing summer "home" in the Hamptons!

I'm ready to pack my bag....are you!?!?

  1. Oh the colors are delicious! Love the artwork, the 1960s furniture and have always wondered where to use that photographers light lamp and now I see it. Quite a drive from the west coast but might be worth it!

  2. Yes, I do love the colors too!!! And I am seriously debating about booking a weekend there soon! The proximity to the ocean is devine! Thanks for commenting! Becky
