Shopping Your Favorite Hotels

I discovered a fun web site the other night when googling around after some hotels I'd been eyeing from Travel and Leisure.  This is really why I read Travel and Leisure - I love checking out the interior designs of various hotels around the world, even though I'm not likely visiting them anytime soon.  Hotel eye candy, that's my thing.

Through a site called Discover and Deliver, you can shop the furnishings, lighting and accessories gracing some of the world's finest luxury hotels and restaurants.  For example, if you were lucky enough to take a ski holiday at the French Hotel Altapura...

...and wanted to create the look in your New England center- entrance colonial, you're in luck (um, kind of).  Discover and Deliver can source you the Cortina armchair and Grizzli stool.

If you prefer sunny beaches to snowy slopes, you can venture over to the W Hotel Miami's offerings...

...including these versatile Tulip family lamps...

...or get inspired in the lounge by Diane Von Furstenberg's funky climbing leopard rug...

Or conversely, you can start with a piece, such as Tom Dixon's copper shade pendant, and see it in different hotel settings...

I'm not a huge fan of it as used in the Smythe Tribeca Hotel in New York...

...but I'm digging it in the Dock Kitchen in London...

Have fun poking around Discover and Deliver!

Base Camp!

Usually opening my winter issues of Travel and Leisure Magazine is somewhat painful.  Splashy spreads featuring the latest Tahitian boutique hotels seem to throw in my face that I'm living in a totally dreary New England, grey landscape.  But a tiny feature mentioning Base Camp Hotel in Lake Tahoe caught my eye, and felt palpable and interesting given our family's interest in skiing and, dare I say, the outdoors.

What could otherwise be a boxy, 1950s hotel on the outside, is nothing but...

Everything from the reclaimed wood, to the camping lanterns, to the gentle touches of green succulents screams cozy, masculine camp lodge, with a modern edge.  Love it.

The vase of colorful arrows is the perfect addition in terms of color and scale.  Might be dangerous after a couple of beers, though.

My favorite room, "The Great Indoors"...

But I'm guessing this would be my kids favorite room...  They'd appreciate the XBox, while I'd appreciate the Cole and Sons wallpaper we previously blogged about here.

The rooms, sticking to a tight color scheme of neutrals paired with orange and neonish green, maximize sleeping potential for the whole family.

Weekend Escape: Newport's The Attwater

I was interested to see, when browsing the latest Travel and Leisure magazine, a short piece on a new Newport, RI hotel decorated by Rachel Reider, a Boston designer who's been taking numbers and generally kicking butt around these parts lately.  The Attwater looks like a lot fun - not afraid to be funky and youthful in a city that's historic and arguably formal/old school.

I couldn't help but notice how many elements of these rooms we've blogged about recently!

I'm pretty sure this couch is flanked by the totally sweet Dunes and Duchess lamps we told you about here.  (Too bad you can't totally appreciate them in this shot!)  And overhead, is that an Ochre fixture (we blogged about our lust for these last year here) I spy?  Or maybe it's the Pottery Barn (not bad) copy.

Lots of fun stuff going on in this guest bedroom!  Including one of our favorite fabrics as window panels (David Hicks' La Fiorentina we told you about herehere, and here).

We tracked the agate lighting trend for you here, and also pointed out the awesomeness of the Worlds Away Greek Key nightstand here.

All rooms come with unlimited use of an Ipad 3!  And the rope lamp, in keeping with the trend we blogged about here, provides a nice nautical touch in this sailing city.

Some other images of The Attwater's guest rooms...

Nice job Rachel Reider!  Great town, great looking hotel - we'd love to check it out!

Ian Schrager - Strikes Again!

Ian Schrager has done it again.  If you aren't familiar with Ian Schrager, he has brought iconic design to the humble hotel.  Often credited with perfecting "boutique" hotels, Travel + Lesiure says of the hotel giant,  "it is possible that Ian Schrager has done more to bring design to the travel experience than any other living person - single handedly reinventing the hotel as a site of electrifying cultural significance".  The creator of such iconic hotels as "The Royalton" and "Hudson" in NYC, Ames in Boston, and Delano in South Beach, etc etc etc, has a new Marriott hotel series that is absolutely amazing.  "The Edition" has opened in Istanbul and Waikiki.  "The Istanbul Edition" location is particularly striking with its gold and bronze color palette and mix of dark and light woods.  Istanbul has just moved up several notches on my list of places to go!!

Take a look at this sultry, opulent, brilliant hotel:

Martha's Vineyard, Farm Style

As I referenced yesterday, I'm fresh off a mellow five day escape to Martha's Vineyard.  Yes, mellow - despite vacationing with six kids age six and under, and sleeping in a haunted bedroom, according to the book Haunted Island", which devotes a whole chapter to our very bedroom as one of the most haunted spots on the island.  (Luckily I don't believe in ghosts, except in the middle of the dark night after reading this chapter, when I might believe in them just a little bit.)

Why so mellow?  We vacationed on one the most remote spots of the island, virtually devoid of traffic, commerce, tourists and cell/internet connectivity - one of the most beautiful spots you could possibly imagine.

Browsing the latest issue of Elle Decor upon my return, I was interested to see the feature on restauranteur Keith McNally's Martha's Vineyard Farm. .  The renovated farm, also located in Chilmark, primarily features vintage flea market finds, and floors and furniture made of reclaimed pine.

Interested in getting this look, affordably?  Check out our suggestions below, all taken from the very accessible Bed, Bath & Beyond!
