Hedgehog Plantings

As I've blogged about before, my quirky daughter loves all things hedgehog (random, cute, scrappy - just like her).  She and her 2nd grade friends even have a little hedgehog club going, complete with ID badges backed with duct tape (the latest rage in little girl crafting).

So when I saw them in online gift guide, I had to snap up these stoneware Anthropologie hedgehog measuring cups... I mean, how cute?  Too cute to actually use (or accurately measure with)...

So I decided to plant succulents in them for the window sill in my revamped kitchen.  A trip to the nursery garnered me these....

... and this....

... and a few minutes later, this...

Have a great day!

Trending: Marbleized Bathrooms

Of the latest Lonny magazine that launched this weekend, I'm loving this bathroom image as the most striking of the issue...

Scout Designs co-founder Nicki Clendening used affordable marbleized craft paper from Paper Mojo to create this wow factor in her Harlem bathroom.

This bathroom, trending on Pinterest lately, uses marbleized wallpaper by Twigs to a stunning effect...

Love the look and want to try it yourself?  Martha's got great instructions here.

I might try it with my girls, using the kid-friendly directions at PBS Kids.

Paint Chip Projects

This image of eggs painted to look like Pantone paint chips got me to thinking that maybe Becky's not the only one out there obsessed with the "off label" uses of paint chips!

This paint chip mural is kind of fun...

especially as used inside the molding in this otherwise drab dining room...

These paint chip inspired moving announcements are adorable!  I mean, when else are you as likely to be obsessed with picking paint colors?

via Etsy seller Chrissy Watson

Etsy seller Laylalous Studio has got it goin' on with the most adorable paint chip paper girl garlands, and origami paint chip butterflies as well!  Love!

Speaking of garlands, I wish I had thought to make an Easter egg garland (though at this point I don't think Becky nor I can walk in a Benjamin Moore store undisguised ever again)...

Same concept, but for 4th of July - brilliant!

Hope you had a great weekend!

Oh My Darling Clementine Candle

I saw the cutest tutorial on Apartment Therapy last week about how to make a candle out of just a clementine and a little olive oil.  I buy these by the box for my little ones, so I thought I'd give it a whirl this evening in the 3 spare minutes I had between their dance dress rehearsal and their hastily prepared and not very good supper.  Check out my version and photographs below!

The first step is to essentially empty out the clementine by scoring it around the circumference and carefully peeling off the skin of the two halves.

One half will hopefully (miraculously?) leave you with the attached pip to be used as your wick.  To this half, add a couple of tablespoons of olive oil to prevent burning.

Strike a match and light 'er up... no "real" wick or tea candle insert required...

For the top half of the clementine/candle, score a design of your choosing to create a vent...

Once you've cut out your design, put your clementine back together....

...and turn out the lights to enjoy your homemade, sweet smelling light show!

To see the original video tutorial from Apartment Therapy, click here.  This is a fast and fun project to enjoy with your kids before they're even done devouring the clementine insides!

DIY Capiz Chandelier

Yep, you read it correctly, a D-I-Y Capiz Chandelier.  Notice I left out the word "shell".  Well in this case, the shells are made from wax paper.  I recently came across a blog called "Freshly Picked" written by Susan Peterson.  She posted a wonderful tutorial on how to make a look alike Capiz Shell Chandelier out of wax paper circles sewn together and draped over an old lamp shade frame. It is genius.  I have been searching for a small Capiz chandelier for months for my bedroom - ever since the one I ordered arrived and was so long, it nearly brushed the duvet on my bed.

Here is the object of my desire - but notice the long chains up to the canopy? Yeah - earlier versions of this photo stopped just after the top of the shells...oh well. I still LOVE it and would absolutely use it in a larger room!!  It is gorgeous in real life!!

Here is West Elm's version - a little sparse on the shells if I do say so myself...but for $129 bucks, it's a steal!

And here is Susan Peterson's DIY wax paper Capiz Chandelier... Pretty lovely - huh?!?

Here is her "before" fixture, which was mercifully disassembled...

Then it was time to assemble the wax paper capiz "shells"...

And here are two of Susan Peterson's happy friends with their DIY chandeliers... LOVE it!!

This might have to wait until after the craziness of the holidays, but I seriously think this project is in my future!!  What do you think??  Should we give it a go?  Anyone want to try it with me?

Cheers!

IKEA O'verlays in Action

Remember the awesome Ikea O'verlays Becky blogged about here?  I saw a great before and after piece featuring this product today on Ohdeedoh (Apartment Therapy's kids design blog).

Amanda Carol, of the blog of the same name, started with this affordable (and dare I say super boring) IKEA dresser for her home office:

With a set of O'verlays, a little gold paint, and some sticky tape, this is what she came up with!

Have you done anything fun around the house lately?

David Hicks Hexagon DIY

I got such a kick out of Apartment Therapy's feature of a blogger's fabulous David Hicks DIY stencil project!  "The Almost 40 Year Old Intern" spent a weekend and a mere $30 creating this stunning stenciled pattern in her bedroom, saving thousands of dollars in the expensive (but awesome) wallpaper.

Not bad, right?  Reminds me of Hello Gorgeous' Imperial Trellis stencil project, which we featured here.  These gals won't let anything get in the way of an awesome iconic wallpaper look for their bedrooms!

And here's a round-up of the "real thing" - David Hicks' Hexagon wallpaper put to good use...

Beaded Waterfall Chandelier DIY

I was soooooo impressed with this do-it-yourself beaded waterfall chandelier featured on 6th Street Design School earlier this week.

Using a wire hanging flower basket as a starting point, you can make this chandelier for a few dollars!  Check out the tutorial at Gus + Lula.  I haven't tackled a good DIY in a while - would love to give this a try for my "new" (and totally stalled out) bedroom project!

Not up to the task?  There are plenty of gorgeous (but more costly!) options on the market...
