Pantone Color of the Year for 2013!!!

I have to admit, I was a bit surprised (yet thrilled!) to see that Pantone's Color of the Year for 2013 is Emerald Green.

It is an incredibly intense color and am glad to see the design world 'going green'.  This versatile color radiates energy, but is still very grounding.

Serene without being boring....

Love emerald green in small pops of color!  It adds such a punch of WOW!

But of course Gweneth already knows that!!!
What do you think of Pantone's Color of the Year?!?

Cheers!

Bunny Williams New Beeline Home!

My first Landscape Design "crush" was on Bunny Williams.  I was in design school at the New York Botanical Gardens in 1997 (crap that makes me feel old!!!).  Her book "On Garden Style" was one of the first garden design inspiration books that I ever bought, and I still treasure it to this day. The photos are stunning and the design is rock solid.

And then I found out that she is also an Interior Designer (I know - totally backwards, most people know her as an Interior Designer first and then find out she designs gardens).  At that point I was totally sold - because that is exactly what I wanted to do.  Not that I would DARE compare myself to such a master, but at the very least we share a similar goal ;).  After all, the design concepts of scale and proportion, style and form, use of space, architecture, color and texture totally cross over between interior and garden design.  Have a look at some of her incredible projects!

I had the tremendous privilege to see Bunny Williams speak at the Boston Design Center yesterday.  She spoke for an hour and for 90% of it, imparted the most incredible, anecdotal information about design, clients, and the business of Interior Design.  One audience member thanked her for her truly "generous" talk. And I couldn't agree more. I suppose that's why she is a master of her art.

She spent the last 10% of her time with us showing her new line "Beeline Home" and explaining the level of detail that goes in to each and every piece. Ensuring that the "undersides of tables are as beautiful as the topsides" and that the finish on the tables has caused even the most learned antiques dealers to question the age of the new piece. You have got to see it to believe it!

This desk has a secret feature - the legs are hollow to accommodate all the ugly computer wires!!

This sofa has over 2,000 individual nail heads!

And this incredible ottoman has plenty of room for feet and bums, but also the tray lifts out!

Incredible. Simply. Incredible.

Cheers!

Thom Filicia - An America Classic

We first met Thom Filicia (and I'll use that term extremely loosely) as we stood in line for an elevator and then took it together to the Kips Bay Showhouse in NYC during Blogfest 2012.  I adored his green lacquer room even more knowing that such a charming, delightful and gracious man created it.

I was totally psyched to see the spread in House Beautiful of Thom Filicia's upstate New York lake house in this month's issue.  And again, I found myself enamored with Thom Felicia and his work. He has such an honest sensibility.  If it doesn't make sense, he just doesn't do it.

He found his home in a derelict and neglected state and thought "Ah, this house needs me. And I need this house."  Isn't it awesome when things just click?  He designed his home to relax and entertain.

My favorite part?  Yep, the firepit down by the lake, where apparently things can get a little silly.  Oh to be a guest and enjoy all that craziness!!!

Check out this month's issue of House Beautiful for the full story and see more fabulous images!  And if you are interested in Thom Filicia's Lake House, you can pre-order his book on the house: "American Beauty".

I know what's on the top of my Christmas list!!

Cheers!

Kips Bay Takeaway: Warming Up Cold Spaces

As I reflect on our trip to Blogfest in NYC, one of my favorite places was the Kips Bay Showhouse on the Upper West Side held at The Aldyn, an incredible new building overlooking the Hudson River.  It is a bit of a departure from the traditional Upper East Side brownstones of the past.  And what I found particularly interesting was how the designers all used different "tactics" to warm-up and "cozify" (yep, just made that up...) the space.  If you look closely, you'll see flat walls, little or no molding or trim and HUGE paneless windows. Nothing bad, but without the right "tactics" it could be a cold and icy place!

Not so!  When you enter the show house, this is what greets you. Yep, the iconic and friendly Scalamandre Zebras!  But more than that, look at all the art, pillows, books, plants, branches, frames, lamps, collections etc used to make the space cozy. This is where a designer (in this case Bryant Keller) really shines!!  There is so much more than just wallpaper!!

When you round the corner you are greeted by the incredible contrast of lacquered green walls and ceilings by Thom Felicia.  He also layered it on to warm up the space and make it feel like a place you want to take a moment to explore. The standout in this room is the incredible, full, drapes that frame each doorway (there are 4)!  The textures in here are almost too numerous to count!

And then you enter the living room dedicated to Albert Hadley by Bunny Williams, Brian McCarthy and David Kleinberg.  They had by far one of the biggest challenges - a two story living room framed by walls of windows. What's a person to do?  Well in this case, they hung a curtain rod and curtain at the same height as the windows to try to scale the room to a much more manageable person's height. They then layered a tapestry over the curtain to increase the warmth. This textile layering also helps to cut down on the audible echo in an unfinished room.  And yes, that is a giant boxwood shrub (fake?) behind the glass on the second story.

Off to the other side of Thom Felicia's incredible green room is the aubergine and chartreuse room of Todd Alexander Romano.  Again, a great use of color to make the room feel warm and cozy and the GIANT chandelier takes up the visual "space" above the table and it all seems to make sense! Brilliant I say!

And then there is the bedroom that Alexa Hampton created.  Here is the entrance - just look at that incredible door, lacquered walls and silver ceiling. On description alone, you'd think ICE COLD...

But look at this incredibly warm space. I can only imagine how may yards of fabric were use here from the very traditional window treatment to the canopy to the bed lines.... it is just incredible. In the chat with Alexa Hampton she mentioned that she used the screen to help you feel like you weren't totally exposed and weren't going to fall out of the bed!

I could go on and on and on...

Cheers!
