Big Boy Bunk Bed

Our oldest has a memory like an elephant. He never forgets anything. Especially something that is as important as a bunk bed. I can't remember when he saw a bunk bed for the first time, but it was love at first sight. He must have been about 3 and asked if he could have one and we said, "Yes, when you are six".  Months went by and we didn't hear anything about a bunk bed.  Until we went shopping and he spotted one, well let's just say he has reminded us weekly, if not daily.  And now he is coming up on six and we need to make good on our promise!

So the trick now is to find something that is not really huge and "heavy" looking. Being that his room is only 11'6" x 13" we need something a little smaller and visually lighter.

Here are some of the usual suspects.  As you will see I am still on the "discovery" phase of this project and really all over the map!!

Land of Nod

Pottery Barn Kids

Layla Grayce
Target
The Well Appointed House

Simply Kids Furniture

Jordan's

Or we could just install this bed from CedarWorks that doubles as a playground! Not sure that would be conducive to sleeping though...

And I really am drawn to built-ins, which we blogged about here, but I just don't think we have the right room for it.   But I really LOVE these built ins:

And this is just freakin' cool... though my 6 yr old still falls out of bed, this might be a bit of a tough landing.

What do you think? Have you seen any great bunk beds out there?  If so leave a comment and let us know!!

  1. I love the built in ones too. We have the PB kids one in espresso stain. My son loves it... But Mom to Mom. It's a huge pain to make the bed! When we have playdates, I'm constantly reminding the boys not to jump off of it! granted my son is 4, still! Scares me to death! Then, last problem is the PB quality... Ours looks like it's 15 years old, it's so scratched. While I know it's not Baker or Hickory Chair prices it's target quality to me... Which makes me wish that I would have gone cheaper. I'm counting down the days to be rid of ours;)

  2. OOOhhhh I love reader feedback! Keep it coming!

Yes, that is a HUGE consideration - is this a "disposable" piece of furniture or more of an heirloom/pass-it-down-to-the-next-sibling piece? If "disposable" than I agree, why waste the money on it??

    Thanks!!

  3. Learning how to build a bunk bed entails more work and planning than say, building furniture. However, with meticulous planning and commitment to get the job done, building a this kind of bed is certainly doable as long as you know how to follow easy instruction from a ready made plans.

  4. I once saw a picture of bunk beds built into a closet. I'm considering it for my 4 and 5 year old boys. They took the double sliding doors off the front of the closet and built bunk beds inside. It freed up the entire room for playing and fun. Of course you'll have to take some room for a dresser of some sort or put their close in another place. Our coat closet is right outside their room so I'm considering using it.
