Lacquer Lust

While the trend's been around a while, lacquer walls are something I don't think I'll ever get sick of.  I loved it when Thom Felicia used them at the Kips Bay showhouse we attended as part of Blogfest last Spring in NYC... Those lacquer walls just slay me.

I recently stumbled onto designer Phoebe Howards' website and saw a more demure, subtle use of the technique...

Walls aside, how incredible is this room?!?  (We've long been a fan of the roman shade fabric, which we first saw as used by Frances Schultz in the Bee Cottage)

The roman shades, white furniture, X benches, diamond pattern sisal rug, the elegant sconces....Wow. Just. Wow.

And it's all topped off with a tonal (built-in?) banquette. Perfection....

Do you love it too?

Gold Up Above!

I've been noticing a ton of gold up above lately, from striking, rich light fixtures (more on that tomorrow), to gold leaf or painted ceilings.  The look is decadent!

What a striking entrance!

The trend works beautifully with greens and blues, as you'll see in the following three images...

This living room is comprised of almost exclusively traditional elements, with the ceiling completing the look (and hitting it out of the ballpark, I might add)...

As we can see below, a gold ceiling can even work in a more casual family room setting...

And Melissa from Houseography provides us the DIY example, with her painted, and then stenciled, powder room... Love this!

New (and Old) in Chalkboard Paint

How fun is this new chalkboard globe, as featured in the new Oprah Magazine hitting stands today?  Love it!  I picture all kinds of fun with this - both educational, and not...

Get yours at The Well Appointed Home, before they sell out from the "Oprah Effect"...

Our blogging friend Janet just featured a fun chalkboard chair in her anniversary issue of House of Fifty.  Love the contrast of the formal lines of the chair, and its fabric, with the funky fun of chalkboard paint!

There are a gazillion cool chalkboard paint projects out there, both new and old.  Here's an oldie but goodie I don't think I've shared before, via Design Sponge.  The application is perfect in that it's high enough to avoid smudging against clothing and little hands, and it provides a fun transition between the wood and paint...

How have you used chalk board paint?
